Khakassia Republic

The Republic of Khakassia, a constituent entity of the Russian Federation, is a part of the Siberian Federal District. The Republic borders on the Republic of Altai in the southwest, the Kemerovo Region in the west and the Krasnoyarsk Territory in the north, east and southeast. 


The Republic of Khakassia is situated in the southeast of Eastern Siberia, on the left bank of the Yenisei River across the Sayan-Altai Plateau and Minusinsk Depression.

The Republic of Khakassia has a harsh continental climate, with hot, dry summers and cold winters with little snow. The average temperature in January is - 18°С, in July + 17°С.

Major natural resources

The Republic of Khakassia is one of the oldest mining regions in Eastern Russia. Iron ore, molybdenum, gold, coal, mineral and radon waters, non-metal resources such as barite, bentonite, marble and granites, construction materials are developed in its territory. Copper, complex metals, phosphorites, asbestos, gypsum, nephrite and jade deposits have also been discovered.


The republic's population is 570,000, with 256,500 males and 313,500 females. The urban population makes up 70.9% (384,100), whereas the rural population makes up 29.1% (156,900).

The economically active population is 268,000, of whom 240,000 are employed. The unemployment rate, calculated to ILO standards, is 10.6%. Senior citizens and minors account for 17.1% and 19.5%, respectively. The rate of natural increase is negative and stands at -4.2 per 1,000. The immigration rate is positive, at + 10.6 per 10,000 largely due to the influx of migrants from Central Asian countries.


Head of Government: Viktor Zimin. Approved for the position by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Khakassia on December 10, 2008, following the nomination by the President of the Russian Federation.

Mayor of Abakan: Nikolai Bulakin. Re-elected as Mayor in April 1999.

Regional issues and prospects

The republic is encumbered by the following issues: ineffective use of forest resources, growth of the shadow economy (in particular illegal export of timber) due to poor monitoring, and unfavourable weather conditions resulting in low crop productivity.
