Tambov Region

The Tambov Region, a constituent entity of the Russian Federation, is a part of the Central Federal District, bordering the Penza, Ryazan, Lipetsk, Voronezh, and Saratov regions. 

Location

The Tambov Region is located in the southern part of the East European Plain, and the central part of the Oka and Don lowlands.

The region consists of 23 districts, 3 town districts, 7 regionally administered cities, 1 town of district subordination, and 13 industrial communities.

Climate

The region is located in a temperate climatic zone and has a temperate continental climate, with the average January temperature of - 11°С (12.2 F), and the average July temperature of +21°С (69.8F).

Natural resources

The region's natural resources include giant and zirconia sands, mineral colours, underground mineral waters, moulding sands, bergmeal, peat, sapropel, low melting clay, mortar sands and stones, and pottery clay.

Population

The region's population is 1,144,800, with 477,400 males and 677,400 females. 57.4% of the population is urban (657,900); and the rural population accounts for 42.6% (486,900) of the population. The economically active population is 521,000, of whom 470,000 are employed. The unemployment rate, calculated using ILO methods, is 7.8%. Senior citizens and minors account for 25.1% and 16%, respectively. The rate of natural increase is negative, at - 10.4 per 1,000.

Regional issues and prospects

The manufacturing sector development, in particular, the engineering and food industries, will be the region's priority. Other prospective areas include new industries' development, the agribusiness sector modernisation, and transport infrastructure development (more than half of all roads require repair).
