Tver Region

The Tver Region, a constituent entity, of the Russian Federation, is a part of the Central Federal District, bordering the Novgorod, Pskov, Vologda, Yaroslavl, Smolensk, and Moscow regions. 


The Tver Region is located in the north-western part of Russia, the upper Volga basin.

The region is located in a temperate climatic zone and has a temperate continental climate, with the average January temperature of -4°С (25 F), and the average July temperature of 17°С (63F).

Natural resources

The region has considerable reserves of natural resources, including sand and gravel materials, construction and silicate sands, low melting and fire clay, various kinds of limestone, peat, sapropel, fresh and mineral underground waters, and brown coal. Over half of the region's territory is covered with mixed forests. The total forest land of the region is approximately 5 million hectares, and the periodic yield amounts to over 6 million cubic metres per year.


The region's population is 1,425,600, with 599,300 males and 826,300 females. Over 73% of the population is urban (1,048,200), while the rural population accounts for 26.7% (377,400 people). The economically active population is 718,000, of whom 678,000 are employed. The unemployment rate, calculated using ILO methods, is 4.8%, with senior citizens and minors accounting for 25.4% and 15.5%, respectively. The natural increase rate is negative and stands at -13.5 per 1,000.

Regional issues and prospects

The priority development areas for the region include the establishment of new manufacturing facilities, targeting Moscow city and Moscow Region markets, the region's transport infrastructure, and the expansion of the exhibition industry and the introduction of new technologies into regional traditional industries. Another priority area is the development of the region's recreational potential through the construction of country houses and tourist facilities.
